Columbus Is Growing. Are Brands Growing With It?

More people create more activity — but not automatically more customers. What Columbus's growth means for brands trying to earn real attention here.

Columbus keeps growing. New residents arrive for jobs, schools, and the cost of a life that still feels manageable. Neighborhoods fill in. New developments rise. The region has become one of the Midwest's clearest growth stories.

That growth is good news for brands. It's also a trap for lazy ones.

More people ≠ more customers

Population growth creates activity: more shoppers, more commuters, more subscriptions, more noise. What it doesn't create is attention. Every new resident arrives with habits formed somewhere else — brands they already trust, routines they already follow, feeds already full.

A growing market raises the stakes. More businesses compete for the same sidewalks, the same retail aisles, the same few seconds of consideration. The brands that grow here won't be the ones that simply showed up when the census did.

Growth is a contact sport

There's a version of marketing that treats a market like a broadcast audience: buy impressions, watch dashboards, hope the curve bends. That version keeps getting more expensive and less distinctive.

There's another version that treats a market like a room full of people. You show up where they already go. You start conversations. You answer the question they actually ask, not the one the script expected. You learn something every single day, and you bring that learning back to the work.

Retail environments are one of the last places this happens at scale — real people, real products, real reactions, in real time.

What we'd tell any brand entering Columbus

  • Don't mistake presence for traction. Being available somewhere is not the same as being chosen there.
  • Treat every customer interaction as research. The questions people ask in aisle seven are better data than another impression report.
  • Build a rhythm, not a campaign. Markets reward consistency more than bursts.
  • Respect the local texture. Columbus is a collection of neighborhoods and communities, not a single demographic.

Columbus is growing. The brands that grow with it will be the ones that keep moving — connecting, learning, adjusting, and going again.

That's the work. It's also the fun part.
